Vogue likes yoga. I have to say out of all the fashion magazines Vogue does support yoga often. They covered us last summer (The Zen Surfer, June 2009). In the new April issue, gorgeous Gisele talks about yoga, the baby, activism and life in Boston.

Surfcat got a call from a very amped up Hawaiian girl the other day, she was visiting NYC and looking to surf somewhere. First, I told her the water’s a chilly 39, it did not scare her off, she truly wanted to experience winter surf in New York. Love that. I lead her to my two go-to sites … New York Surf and Surfline.

Have you been using sun protection throughout winter? I hope so. Spring is around the corner with sunnier days to come. Surfcat is very concerned about the sun, the sea and the effects on her skin especially the ingredients in suncare protection. Liquid Yoga + Surf has a new in kind sponsor this summer that cares about what you put on your skin. Badger is certified organic and contains the mineral Zinc Oxide as the sunscreen. All good surfers know that it’s the Zinc that protects the skin. We look forward to using it this summer. Thank you, Badger.

Ode to the Avocado & other news! Surfcat is now producing Retreats for other studios and teachers, or trips for private parties that focus on yoga, surfing or another sport of interest, or cooking? First up this spring is Sabina Stahl’s Yoga + Intuitive Cooking Retreat in East Hampton May 21-23. Not only is Sabina an amazing yoga teacher but she’s also an incredible cook who has taught me a thing or two especially this non-sugar chocolate mousse. It has one main ingedient, a beautifully ripe avocado (a good fat) and can be made in five minutes: one ripe avocado, 1 tbsp cocao powder, and a few drops of stevia for sweetner (or honey). You can also add a little shredded coconut, ground cardamom, a little salt and a little vanilla rice milk or soy milk. A cusinart is needed to whip the ingredients together, and that’s it. No one will believe this mousse was made with an avocado. It’s heaven.

Spring is only a few weeks away, if you’re lucky you’re heading to a spring break. If not, you can take a little spring break/detox at home. Really take the weekend off, don’t open your computer, take a yoga class, get a massage, a steam or sauna, cut out sugar, meat, bread and pasta, and simply take some time out for yourself. A delicious and nutritious Ayurvedic recipe is called Kitchari, perfect for those who do not want to give up food altogether, to be eaten three times a day or any time you are hungry. In Ayurvedic terms, health begins in the digestive track and Kitchari offers a way to purify digestion and cleanse toxins. Here’s a delicious recipe handed down from yogini to yogini.

Basmati rice, 1 cup
Water, 4-6 cups
Mung dal (green lentils), 1/2 cup (Pictured)
Ghee, 2-3 tbls (clarified butter)
Turmeric, 1 tsp
Cumin, 1 tsp
Coriander, 1 tsp
Cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp
Black mustard seeds, a pinch
Fresh Ginger, 4-5 slices
Rock salt, 1 tsp
Cook everything like you’d cook rice but the consistency will be more like a porridge as there’s more water involved.

Garnish (the best part)
Cilantro
Coconut (shredded)
Lime juice
Any greens: avocado, beets, kale, etc

Make enough for leftovers for one day, it’s best made in small, fresh batches.
