From Taghazout to Essaouira, Morocco

We had such a magical trip to Morocco in 2009 that we are going back. It’s the perfect time of the year as the season is quietly starting, and with 300 days of sunshine and an average temperature in the 70s, this laid back surfing and fishing village is the perfect hideaway. After yoga and surfing in Taghazout, we’ll wind down with a cultural side trip to Essaouira.

Killer Point Surf Apartments, Taghazout is located on the beach at Killers Point, Morocco’s most famous surf break. You can paddle out from the apartment, or lay by the infinity pool and chill. This luxurious, modern apartment-style hotel consist of two bedrooms with shared bathroom; up to four people will share one apartment.

Maison du Sud, Essaouira is a Riad located in the heart of the Medina in Essaouira. A Riad is a house or palace turned into a private boutique hotel with an interior garden. A Medina is a small city surrounded by stone walls, the one in Essaouira is on the door steps of the sea with breath-taking views.

Yoga Lauren Hanna and Twee will lead pre-breakfast vinyasa flow and pre-sunset restorative classes every day on the pool deck facing the ocean at Killers and on the rooftop terrace of Maison du Sud in Essaouira.

Surfing Taghazout is known for its world class surf. There are breaks for every skill level with quality surf instructors and guides from Nomad Surfers, including board and wetsuit rentals. Surfing lessons for five days approx $235 (includes board, wetsuit, lunch and 4 hours surfing broken down into two sessions). Or if you are more experienced, hire a surfing guide to the right spots at the right times for five days $168 (includes lunch).

Taghazout is a surf town, early to bed, early to rise and surf. You can explore the local souks and take a traditional hammam with massage nearby. If you want more entertainment, Agadir is a tourist destination with many hotels, restaurants and bars, taxi costs $30 one way (can split between four people).

Essaouira Formerly known as Mogador, Essaouira is a Unesco Heritage site located on the Atlantic Coast. A water sports paradise, the strong winds make it an ideal place for wind and kite surfing. Rentals are found on the beachfront. Explore the Medina for shopping and art, or eat and drink at the numerous cafes and restaurants. Sunsets are not to be missed.

Travel Fly to Agadir (AGA) and we’ll have a driver pick you up, it’s a 20-minute drive to Taghazout; however, if you are planning a side trip to Marrakesh (RAK) we suggest flying to Marrakesh; take a bus or taxi to/from Taghazout/Essaouira. Expect to pay at least $1200 airfare roundtrip from New York. If you’re bringing your surfboard, Royal Air Maroc does not charge an additional fee.

Car Rental You do not need a rental car in Taghazout or Essaouira unless you want to explore on your own. Surfing lessons and guides will transport you to the surf spots. We provide airport transfers from Agadir to Taghazout, and Taghazout to Essaouira. We do not provide transport from Essaouira to the airport of your departure but we will schedule groups to share taxis. Essaouira to Agadir about $67, Essaouira to Marrakesh $125.

(You may pay by cashiers check or cash, but your reservation will NOT be confirmed until such payment is received and/or cleared). Once your non-refundable payment has been received/cleared we will confirm your registration by e-mail. All payments are non-refundable except for illness as demonstrated by a physician’s note. A credit can be applied towards a future class. All clinics and retreats will take place in rain or shine. Only lightning or a hurricane will cancel surf. In case of a cancellation, you will receive a call and/or text by 6am on day of the event. Liquid Yoga + Surf has the right to cancel a retreat up to two weeks due to low enrollment.
