Spring is only a few weeks away, if you’re lucky you’re heading to a spring break. If not, you can take a little spring break/detox at home. Really take the weekend off, don’t open your computer, take a yoga class, get a massage, a steam or sauna, cut out sugar, meat, bread and pasta, and simply take some time out for yourself. A delicious and nutritious Ayurvedic recipe is called Kitchari, perfect for those who do not want to give up food altogether, to be eaten three times a day or any time you are hungry. In Ayurvedic terms, health begins in the digestive track and Kitchari offers a way to purify digestion and cleanse toxins. Here’s a delicious recipe handed down from yogini to yogini.

Basmati rice, 1 cup
Water, 4-6 cups
Mung dal (green lentils), 1/2 cup (Pictured)
Ghee, 2-3 tbls (clarified butter)
Turmeric, 1 tsp
Cumin, 1 tsp
Coriander, 1 tsp
Cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp
Black mustard seeds, a pinch
Fresh Ginger, 4-5 slices
Rock salt, 1 tsp
Cook everything like you’d cook rice but the consistency will be more like a porridge as there’s more water involved.

Garnish (the best part)
Cilantro
Coconut (shredded)
Lime juice
Any greens: avocado, beets, kale, etc

Make enough for leftovers for one day, it’s best made in small, fresh batches.
